Two patios of the same size can differ in price by thousands of dollars. Four factors do most of the moving:
Paver choice. This is the single biggest material lever. Basic concrete pavers run about $0.50–$2 each; tumbled, textured, or large-format architectural pavers climb to $3–$6 and up, and natural stone (bluestone, travertine) costs more still. The same 144-square-foot patio can carry $300 or $1,200 in pavers alone depending on what you pick.
Base depth. A patio for foot traffic needs about 4 inches of compacted crushed-stone base; if the patio will carry occasional vehicle weight or sits on soft, clay-heavy soil, that base grows to 6 or more inches. Every extra inch is more gravel to buy, haul, and compact — and on the contractor side, more excavation and machine time.
Site access and prep. A flat backyard a wheelbarrow can reach is cheap to work. A sloped lot, a narrow side gate that blocks a skid-steer, tree roots, or poor drainage all add hours (DIY) or labor dollars (contractor). Excavation and hauling spoil away is frequently underestimated — the dirt you dig out has to go somewhere.
Region and season. Labor rates swing widely by metro area, and material delivery costs rise with distance from the quarry or yard. Peak season (late spring through early fall) also tightens contractor availability and pricing. None of this shows up in a per-square-foot rule of thumb, which is why the calculator lets you override every number with a local quote.
The money side is only half the decision — the other half is time, tools, and your tolerance for a physical project. Here's an honest look at both.
Time. A 12×12-foot patio is realistically 2–3 weekends for a first-timer: a day or more of excavation, a day building and compacting the base in lifts, a day screeding sand and setting pavers, plus cutting, edging, and jointing. A seasoned crew does the same job in 1–2 days because they've done it a hundred times and bring the right equipment.
Tools. The one you can't skip is a plate compactor — rent one for about $50–$100 a day. Skipping compaction is the number-one cause of pavers that sink and heave within a season, so this isn't optional. You'll also want a mason's line, a long level, a screed board, a masonry saw or splitter for cuts, and a serious wheelbarrow. Most of these are cheap to rent or already in a DIYer's garage.
When to hire instead. Bring in a contractor when the base is load-bearing (a driveway or a patio a vehicle will cross), when the site needs real grading or drainage work, when the design has lots of curves and cuts, or simply when the 2–3 weekends of hard physical labor aren't realistic for you. The DIY savings are real, but they're wages you pay yourself in sweat — if the base prep is beyond your comfort zone, a professional footing is cheaper than tearing out a failed patio and starting over.
